History, Terroir and People: Flaccianello della Pieve

Behind every wine, you can always read fascinating details of history, territories and people.

Capsula del Flaccianello

This is the case of this wonderful and iconic cross of intertwined threads, which has become the symbol of one of the greatest Tuscan and Italian wines.

We are in the wonderful"Conca d'Oro" of Panzano in Chianti, in the hearth of Chianti Classico area, where you can find great wines produced with the Classico specification and also masterpieces framed in the broader appellation of Indicazione Geografica Tipica Toscana (IGT Toscana). In this case, the producer is not bound to the strict DOCG production protocol, but is rather free to interpret his grapes and his wine in the most imaginative and broadest way, creating an important diversification at the production level.

IGT wines could be the litmus test of every cellar, they are the ones that skilfully clear the circuits made of strict rules. They are the ones that in the sip release all the declinations of the terroir of origin even over time.

Flaccianello IGT Colli della Toscana Centrale, 100% Sangiovese, produced by Fontodi, is one of the most interesting examples to be analyzed also from a marketing point of view.

Fontodi chooses for Flaccianello a fascinating graphic and historical representation strongly linked precisely to the point where its vineyards are located.

It is at this point that man crosses the border of the simple producer and becomes a brilliant historical interpreter and a rare artist.

Lastra di Arenaria con Croce

The cross represented on the Flaccianello label is typical of an ancient sandstone slab located in the Pieve di San Leolino in Flacciano (Panzano).

The fascinating romanesque parish church of San Leolino, the first evidence of which dates back to 982 AD, stands a few hundred meters from the winery and is part of the "circuit" of the 5 parish churches in Tuscany dedicated to San Leolino.

According to most historical sources, San Leolino was the Bishop and Martyr who assiduously preached the Gospel in the Tuscan areas of the 5 churches dedicated to him and was most likely killed during the persecutions of Diocletian in 303 AD.

In summary, the elements of history, religion and art are combined with wisdom and ability and represent the real scenario of a territory and of production excellence.
